Carter Bridge to be demolished as FG declares it unsafe and irreparable

The Federal Government has declared the Carter Bridge in Lagos unsafe, with Works Minister Dave Umahi confirming demolition plans after structural tests failed.

The Federal Government has announced plans to demolish the 124-year-old Carter Bridge in Lagos, declaring it structurally unfit and beyond repair.

Works Minister Dave Umahi disclosed this during an inspection of the bridge’s underdeck, noting that technical reports from Julius Berger Plc and other consultants confirmed both the main section and ramps had failed integrity tests.

“What we did today was to see whether we can salvage the ramps so that we can cut down the cost of construction and the time of construction. But if the observations sent to us are correct, it means that both the ramp and the main axial section of the Carter Bridge will have to go,” Umahi said.

Commissioned in 1901, Carter Bridge was the first link between Lagos Island and the mainland. Despite multiple upgrades, it remains a vital artery for commuters. Umahi stressed safety and long-term sustainability would guide final decisions as plans for a replacement structure advance.
