NHTSA is investigating Tesla’s 2021 Model Y after reports that faulty electronic door handles left passengers trapped inside.

U.S. auto safety regulators have launched an investigation into Tesla’s 2021 Model Y over concerns that faulty electronic door handles may trap passengers inside.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Tuesday that the probe covers about 174,300 midsize SUVs. The agency received nine reports of doors failing to open, most often when parents exited the vehicle and were unable to retrieve children from the back seat. In four cases, individuals broke windows to regain access.

“While there are manual door releases inside the vehicles, a child may not be able to reach or operate the releases,” NHTSA said.

The problem appears linked to insufficient voltage supplied to electronic locks. Repair records reviewed by the agency showed batteries were replaced after such incidents, though no warning signals were reported beforehand.

NHTSA said its preliminary evaluation will assess the risks and Tesla’s approach to powering door locks, and it may take further action.
