Tinubu says enforcing NIN across all sectors is central to Nigeria’s digital future, pledging full coverage, digital trust, and security.
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the full enforcement of the National Identification Number (NIN) across all sectors, insisting identity remains the foundation of Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Speaking at the 2025 National Day of Identity in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, stressed that enforcing NIN is not just about compliance but about building “a secure, inclusive digital ecosystem.” He declared, “Identity is more than just a record. It is the foundation of citizenship, the gateway to opportunity, and the anchor for national security.”
Tinubu noted that over 126 million Nigerians have enrolled, enabling access to education loans, business registration, immigration services, elections, admissions, and corps deployment. He added, “The National Identification Number must become the key that unlocks every service, every opportunity, and every platform in both the public and private sectors.”
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described Public Key Infrastructure as national infrastructure critical to digital trust, while NIMC DG Abisoye Coker-Odusote assured that the identity database remains secure despite attempted breaches.
The event, themed “Public Key Infrastructure: Backbone to Digital Public Infrastructure,” also saw partners pledge support for universal coverage.
