Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich punished Chelsea’s defensive mistakes to seal a 3-1 win in their Champions League opener.

Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich defeated Chelsea 3-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, exploiting costly errors from the visitors in their return to Europe’s top competition.

Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal in the 20th minute gave Bayern the lead after Chelsea switched off during a drop-ball situation. Seven minutes later, Kane won and converted a penalty following a foul by Moises Caicedo. Chelsea responded quickly through Cole Palmer, who marked his 100th appearance for the club by firing into the top corner on 29 minutes.

Despite a spirited spell, Chelsea’s defensive frailties resurfaced in the second half. Malo Gusto’s misplaced pass gifted Kane possession, and the 32-year-old striker curled home his second in the 63rd minute to end the contest. Bayern also saw chances through Michael Olise and Kane go begging as Chelsea pushed for an equaliser. Palmer had a late goal ruled out for a marginal offside.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, 39, made his 151st Champions League appearance, while Chelsea’s entire squad had a combined 117 before kick-off. The win extended Bayern’s remarkable record of starting their European campaigns with a victory for the 22nd consecutive season.

Chelsea will now host Benfica at Stamford Bridge, a match likely to coincide with the anticipated appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager.
