Peter Obi has declared that democracy in Nigeria is failing and “is no longer accountable to” or serving the needs of the people.
Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that democracy is “dying” in Nigeria, arguing that the system no longer serves the needs of its citizens.
Speaking recently on social media, Obi asserted: “Nigeria is a typical example of where democracy is dying because it no longer serves the needs of the people and is no longer accountable to them.” He criticised the state of governance, citing eroded accountability and disconnection between elected officials and the populace.
Obi also pointed out that many of the fundamental features that define democracy—government of, by, and for the people—are missing in today’s Nigeria. He maintained that citizens’ votes often do not count, and that public institutions are failing to deliver basic services.
