Hong Kong police have ordered the evacuation of 6,000 residents after a World War II-era bomb was discovered at a construction site in Quarry Bay on Friday.

District commander Andy Chan said the bomb, measuring 1.5 metres long and weighing 450 kilograms, was “fully functional” and posed “extremely high risks.”

“Due to the extremely high risks involved in dismantling and disposing of the bomb, we must activate the emergency evacuation plan,” Chan said.

Eighteen buildings will be cleared Friday night, with demolition work starting early Saturday and expected to last around 12 hours.

Police warned the device, containing 500 pounds of explosives, could have caused massive casualties if mishandled.
