Erik Siebert resigned as Virginia’s U.S. attorney after President Trump called for his firing over a failed probe into Letitia James.

Erik Siebert, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, resigned Friday after President Trump demanded his removal. Mr. Trump criticized Siebert’s handling of a probe into New York Attorney General Letitia James, saying it failed to deliver evidence of alleged mortgage fraud. “Yeah, I want him out, yeah,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Siebert, appointed in May and awaiting Senate confirmation, had gained support from Virginia Democrats Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, which Mr. Trump cited as a factor in his decision. “When I saw that he got approved by these two terrible people … I said, I don’t really want him,” the president said.

Ms. James dismissed the fraud allegations as “baseless” and retaliatory, accusing Mr. Trump of seeking revenge over civil fraud charges she brought against him in New York. Maggie Cleary has been named acting U.S. attorney.
