No evidence ties Charlie Kirk’s accused killer to left-wing groups, federal probe finds

Federal investigators say there is no evidence linking Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin Tyler Robinson to left-wing groups, complicating federal prosecution.

Federal investigators have so far found no evidence linking Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to any left-wing organizations, despite President Donald Trump’s pledge to crack down on such groups after the killing. “Thus far, there is no evidence connecting the suspect with any left-wing groups,” one person familiar with the probe told NBC News. Another source said Robinson appeared to have acted alone, motivated by personal animosity toward Kirk’s ideology.

Robinson allegedly targeted Kirk during a Sept. 10 campus debate at Utah Valley University, telling a roommate beforehand: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” Prosecutors said he planned the attack for more than a week and later told the roommate: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

He currently faces state charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice, with Utah prosecutors seeking the death penalty. Federal charges remain uncertain due to jurisdictional limits and the absence of a federal statute making domestic terrorism a standalone crime.

The Justice Department said the investigation is ongoing. Kirk’s funeral is scheduled for Sunday in Arizona, where federal agencies have warned of potential threats to attendees, though none have been confirmed.
