Trump plans to sign an order designating Antifa a terrorist group, sparking debate over its definition and political violence in the U.S.
President Donald Trump will sign an executive order designating Antifa a domestic terrorist organization “as soon as today,” the White House said Monday.
“Antifa is going to be designated a domestic terrorist organization. The president intends to sign that executive order very soon, as soon as it’s drafted, as soon as today, later this afternoon,” spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
The move follows Trump’s pledge to act against left-wing groups after the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this month, though no motive or group link has been established. Critics note that studies attribute most political violence in the U.S. to right-wing actors.
Former FBI Director Christopher Wray previously told Congress that “we look at Antifa as more of an ideology or a movement than an organization.” Trump, in a Truth Social post, called Antifa “a sick, dangerous, radical left disaster” and said those funding it will also be investigated.
