Trump told the UN that Christianity is the world’s most persecuted religion while defending tariffs as tools to protect U.S. sovereignty.

United States President Donald Trump has described Christianity as “the most persecuted religion on the planet today” during his address to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump urged global leaders to uphold free expression and religious liberty. “Let us defend free speech and free expression. Let us protect religious liberty, including for the most persecuted religion on the planet today: It’s called Christianity,” he said. He further called on nations to safeguard their sovereignty and preserve values that make them “special, incredible and extraordinary.”

Earlier in February, Trump signed an executive order targeting what he termed “anti-Christian bias.”

On trade, he defended the U.S. use of tariffs, saying they are necessary to protect sovereignty and national security. “That’s why the United States is now applying tariffs to other countries… we’ve used tariffs as a defense mechanism under the Trump administration,” he stated, accusing some nations of breaking global trade rules to the detriment of compliant countries.
