FRSC boss says operatives should be armed

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has said road safety operatives may need arms to enforce traffic regulations.

Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has said arming personnel may be necessary to enforce traffic laws on Nigerian highways.

Speaking on ARISE News on Thursday, Mohammed highlighted the dangers operatives face when stopping overloaded trucks and tankers. “How do you stop a trailer or a tanker on the road? A truck, especially one with up to 100 passengers on top with animals, and you only have four personnel on patrol, how do you stop that?” he asked.

He maintained that without what he described as “power of cohesion,” enforcement remains difficult.

On allegations of extortion, Mohammed admitted the problem exists but said the FRSC has dismissed several officers over bribery. He clarified that driver’s licence fees remain ₦15,000 for three years and ₦21,000 for five years, apologising for delays. He assured Nigerians of an improved licence system by October.
