A 14-year-old Mexican girl has died following breast augmentation and a butt lift allegedly arranged by her mother and performed by her mother’s plastic surgeon boyfriend, who is now under investigation for negligent homicide.

Authorities in Durango, Mexico, are investigating the death of 14-year-old Paloma Nicole Arellano Escobedo, who died days after undergoing breast and buttock enhancement surgery reportedly arranged without her father’s knowledge.

The teenager fell into a coma with brain swelling and heart complications after the procedure and died on Saturday, according to El Siglo de Durango. Her father, Carlos Arellano, said he was initially told she died of Covid-19, only discovering the surgery after relatives noticed changes to her body at the funeral. “Sure enough: she had breast implants. We have photographs of the implants and the scars. We immediately requested an autopsy,” he told prosecutors.

The operation was allegedly carried out by her mother’s partner, a 45-year-old surgeon identified only as Víctor “N.”

Durango Attorney General Yadira de la Garza Fragoso confirmed the doctor’s license has been suspended and said investigators are probing possible negligent homicide.

“We cannot continue to normalize the sexualization of girls or allow the ambition of some adults to put their lives at risk,” the grieving father wrote online, vowing to campaign against cosmetic surgery for minors under the slogan: “Girls don’t need implants.”
