A gunman firing from a boat killed three people and wounded eight others at a North Carolina dockside restaurant before being detained by authorities.
Three people were killed and eight others injured on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire from a passing boat into a crowded waterfront restaurant in Southport, North Carolina.
According to officials, the unidentified boater pulled up to the American Fish Company restaurant at Southport Yacht Basin around 9:30 p.m. and began shooting into a crowd of diners before fleeing up the Intracoastal Waterway.
A person matching the shooter’s description was later spotted loading the vessel at a marina on Oak Island, about five miles away. The U.S. Coast Guard detained the individual, who is now in the custody of Oak Island police pending transfer to Southport for questioning.
Authorities did not release the suspect’s identity or a possible motive. Police declared an “active shooter” situation before confirming the threat was contained. “Importantly, there is currently no known further credible threat to the public,” officers said. The restaurant had been hosting a live music performance at the time.
