The ADC has ordered Atiku Abubakar and other leaders to register at their wards by year’s end or forfeit recognition as party members.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has given former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and other prominent members until the end of 2025 to obtain membership cards at their wards or risk losing recognition in the party.
Adamawa State Chairman of the ADC, Shehu Yohanna, disclosed this in Yola while unveiling the party’s membership register. He insisted that only registered cardholders would be recognised. “Atiku Abubakar should go to his ward in Jada Local Government and register, Babachir should go to his ward in Hong Local Government and register. That is the only way they can be treated as legitimate members of the party,” Yohanna said.
He stressed that it was “illegal” for anyone to hold a national leadership role without being registered, warning that such practices made “a caricature of the party.” Yohanna also declared the ADC ready to challenge the ruling APC in 2027, citing unpopular government policies as an advantage.
The PUNCH gathered that Atiku, whose membership registration was suspended in August, is weighing a possible ADC presidential run, as Peter Obi’s growing influence reshapes the party’s dynamics.
