A resident has accused Ogun police officers of torturing an innocent man to death after wrongly suspecting him of involvement in a robbery.
A resident of Ogun State, Michael Awoyemi, has accused police officers from Ago Iwoye Police Station of torturing a man named Ganiyu to death after mistaking him for a robber. Awoyemi, who narrated the incident on X, said officers tied Ganiyu up, beat him with batons and slashed him with machetes until he died.
He explained that the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday after armed robbers briefly struck Mini Campus. Ganiyu, who lived nearby, had been sent by neighbours to buy fuel and returned after the robbers had left, prompting suspicion.
“Instead of investigating or finding the real robbers, the officers chose the easy target,” Awoyemi wrote. “He was innocent. He was only helping. But the very people meant to protect him, the police became his killers.”
Ganiyu was rushed to Love and Care Hospital but was declared dead. The Ogun State Police Command said the matter would be investigated.
