Putin fears U.S. space weapons from Golden Dome

Putin and China oppose Trump’s Golden Dome missile shield, warning it threatens nuclear deterrence and could reignite an arms race.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced alarm over President Trump’s planned Golden Dome missile defense system, warning it could undermine Moscow’s nuclear deterrent.

Putin told Russia’s Security Council that the project — which includes space-based interceptors and AI-driven missile tracking — risks erasing Moscow’s ability to maintain strategic balance. “We will be working on the assumption that putting such destabilizing actions into practice is able to reduce to nothing our side’s efforts … And we will react accordingly,” he said.

Golden Dome, set for completion by 2029, would create a four-layer shield against missiles, aircraft and drones, combining land-based defenses in the U.S., Alaska and Hawaii with satellite interceptors. The Pentagon has drawn comparisons to Reagan’s “Star Wars” initiative.

Russia, which recently modernized its nuclear arsenal with new missiles and submarines, accused Washington of destabilizing strategic arms treaties after suspending New START in 2023. China also opposes the system, saying it threatens deterrence and could enable U.S. preemptive strikes.

U.S. officials argue Golden Dome is needed to counter rising missile threats from both Russia and China, but Moscow has hinted it may respond with military-technical measures.
