CAN says Nigeria’s progress must be measured by food security, safety, and opportunities for youth.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned that millions of citizens remain trapped in hunger, insecurity, and unemployment despite economic reforms.
In a statement marking Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh congratulated the nation but urged leaders to prioritise food security, safety, and youth empowerment.
“True progress must be measured not only by statistics but by the food on every table, the security of every community, and the opportunities available to every child,” Okoh said.
CAN acknowledged gains in education, healthcare, infrastructure and agriculture but stressed that rising living costs, inflation, and brain drain threaten progress.
On security, it lamented terrorism, kidnapping and communal violence, urging stronger collaboration between security agencies, communities, and faith groups.
The body also appealed for unity above ethnic and political divides. “The dawn of a new Nigeria is possible,” Okoh said, expressing optimism that peace and prosperity remain within reach.
