A 6.9-magnitude earthquake in the Philippines has killed at least 69 people and left hospitals overwhelmed as rescuers search for survivors under landslides and collapsed buildings.

Rescue teams in the Philippines are racing against time to find survivors after a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck waters off the central island of Cebu late Tuesday, killing at least 69 people. Authorities warned the toll could rise further as many remain trapped beneath rubble and landslides.

The shallow quake, the country’s deadliest since 2013, reduced buildings to ruins, including a century-old church. Homes, shops and bridges were severely damaged across Cebu’s northern coast, while power outages complicated rescue efforts.

In Bogo City, the worst-hit area near the epicentre, bodies covered in black sheets lined the ground outside overwhelmed hospitals. Civil defence officials confirmed at least 14 deaths from a landslide, with ongoing searches for missing residents.

“It’s been one aftershock after another,” said security guard Mark Ochea, who survived a restaurant collapse. Tricycle driver Sonny Cuse added, “We thought we could have died today, but we’re thankful.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr vowed swift assistance as authorities appealed for medical volunteers and emergency supplies.
