A 40-year-old Hapur man swallowed several objects in protest after rehab admission, prompting a rare surgical intervention.

Doctors at Devnandani Hospital were left shocked when a 40-year-old man from Hapur was brought in with severe stomach pain, only to discover dozens of steel spoons, toothbrushes and pens inside his abdomen.

Scans revealed a total of 50 foreign objects, all of which he had swallowed allegedly in protest after being admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad.

A five-hour surgery led by Dr. Shyam Kumar successfully removed 29 spoons, 19 toothbrushes and two pens. “When we performed the ultrasound, X-ray and CT scan, we were stunned to see metallic and plastic objects inside his stomach. I have never seen so many foreign bodies in one patient,” Dr. Kumar said.

The man told reporters, “I would pick them up and go to the washroom to swallow them.” Doctors believe the behavior could be linked to a psychiatric condition such as pica disorder.
