Many feared dead as petrol tanker fire engulfs Ogun expressway

A midnight tanker accident in Ogun sparked a massive fire, leaving several feared dead and causing widespread damage.

An unconfirmed number of persons have been feared dead following a petrol tanker fire that erupted at midnight on the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, Ogun State. The spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the incident occurred around 1 am when a 33,000-litre fuel-laden tanker overturned due to excessive speeding, spilling its contents on the highway.

“The case of an inferno caused by a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker which fell on its side and spilled its contents around 0100hrs today… due to excessive speed and loss of control, has been reported,” Akinbiyi confirmed. He added that the blaze destroyed a truck, a tow vehicle, and PHCN cables supplying electricity to Mowe.

Rescue agencies, including TRACE, FRSC, Police, and Fire Services, battled to contain the fire, with traffic diverted to a single lane. Akinbiyi urged motorists to remain calm and cooperate with diversions.
