LASUED’s Vice-Chancellor declared that Lagos State teachers will receive a minimum monthly salary of ₦150,000, urging enhanced investments in infrastructure and support for educators.
In a statement made at Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, affirmed that “no teacher in the state earns less than N150,000 monthly.” The announcement came during an event themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” held at the Ijanikin campus on Monday in honour of World Teachers’ Day.
Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye emphasized that adequate compensation is central to valuing educators and maintaining the integrity of the profession. “When teachers are undervalued, underpaid, and unsupported, the entire educational edifice begins to crack,” she warned.
She also noted that failure to address teachers’ welfare often leads to “brain drain, low morale, and a reduced appeal of the profession to bright young minds.” In light of this, she urged further reforms, including increasing investment in infrastructure and digital learning tools.
She appealed to the Lagos State Government and education funding bodies to allocate 20 percent of the annual education budget for upgrading classrooms, equipping science labs, and providing technology in public schools beginning in the 2026 fiscal year.
