The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is calling on Nigerians at home and abroad to adopt its newly launched “Payments System Vision 2028” and associated initiatives—such as non-resident BVN—to deepen digital financial inclusion and strengthen the country’s payments infrastructure

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has appealed to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora to adopt the newly unveiled Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, with the aim of enhancing financial inclusion across the country. The appeal was made on Thursday in Calabar, Cross River State, during the opening session of the CBN Fair, where Governor Olayemi Michael Cardoso spoke, though represented by Mr. Uche Tobias of the communications department.

Speaking under the theme “Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development,” Cardoso said the vision is expected to accelerate digital transformation, widen financial inclusion, and reduce downtime by making transactions safer and faster. He noted that the payments framework would enable Nigeria’s financial system to compete globally.

Cardoso further highlighted various steps already taken by the apex bank, including exchange rate unification, bank recapitalization, and the launch of a non-resident BVN to enable Nigerians abroad to connect with home banking services. He asserted that these measures are all geared toward reinforcing Nigeria’s financial system.

At the same event, Mr. Kelly Ayamba, President of the Calabar Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that the fair could sensitize citizens and encourage their participation in economic development, stating, “We see this as a whole attempt by the CBN to ensure financial inclusion. Financial inclusion in the sense that everybody is carried along.”
