President Bola Tinubu granted clemency to 175 individuals, including high-profile convicts and historical figures, citing remorse, age and correction of past injustices.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration on Saturday published the full list of 175 individuals granted presidential pardon, including convicts of murder, fraud and drug trafficking. The announcement followed Thursday’s approval of clemency for former lawmaker Farouk Lawan, convicted of fuel subsidy fraud, and Nweke Francis Chibueze, serving life imprisonment for cocaine trafficking, among others.

According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, most beneficiaries were selected because they had “shown remorse and good conduct.” Others were pardoned on grounds of old age, vocational rehabilitation or enrolment in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

The list, drafted by the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy led by Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, also extended symbolic justice to nationalist Herbert Macaulay, whom the statement said was wrongfully penalised by British colonial authorities.

“Illegal miners, white-collar convicts, remorseful drug offenders… and the other Ogoni Eight were among the 175,” the statement noted.
