EFCC: Tax evasion, financial crimes harm Nigeria’s economy

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has described tax evasion and other financial offences as a betrayal of national interest and a major setback to Nigeria’s development.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said tax evasion, false declarations, and other financial malpractices are not only illegal but also a disservice to Nigeria.

The Commission’s Acting Zonal Director, Kano Zonal Directorate, Sa’ad Hanafi, made this known during a one-day sensitization workshop jointly organized by the EFCC, the Nigeria Customs Service, and the Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (KACCIMA).

Hanafi said such illegal practices deprive the nation of funds needed for critical infrastructure and social services.

“Tax evasion, submission of false declarations, and other financial malpractices are not just illegal; they are a disservice to our nation,” he said. “The EFCC, in collaboration with sister agencies, is increasingly deploying intelligence and technology to track and disrupt these schemes.”

He described the workshop as a strategic collaboration to boost compliance and promote transparency in trade and financial operations across Nigeria.
