A Nigerian national, identified as Chimezie, was brutally shot and killed by unknown assailants at a bar in Durban, South Africa, on Thursday night.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. while the victim, who worked as a bartender, was attending to customers. According to a source who spoke anonymously, two men entered the establishment and targeted Chimezie directly.
“What we learnt was that Chimezie had just resumed work that evening and was busy attending to customers at the bar when two men walked up to him,” the source stated. “They had barely spoken for a minute when one of them opened fire on him. He was shot multiple times, and then they ran out.”
Chimezie was confirmed dead at the scene. The source suggested the murder might be connected to cult-related activities, a recurring issue in violent attacks involving Nigerians in South Africa.
The President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr. Smart Nwobi, confirmed the incident. “Indeed, we are aware. We have been collaborating with the South African law enforcement to bring an end to the gang-related attacks and killings,” he disclosed. When asked if any arrests had been made, he stated, “None, so far.” This killing follows the reported murders of two other Nigerians, Austin and Ayo, in Durban just months prior.
