The Federal Government has approved new national admission guidelines aimed at widening access to tertiary education and removing outdated barriers.
The Federal Government has approved a major reform of admission entry requirements across all tertiary institutions to expand access to higher education.
According to the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, the new National Guidelines aim to “remove barriers while maintaining academic standards.”
He noted that over two million candidates sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination each year, but only about 700,000 gain admission due to “outdated and overly stringent entry requirements.”
The revised policy standardises minimum entry credits for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. It also replaces the National Industrial Diploma previously issued by Innovation Enterprise Academies with the National Diploma.
Dr Alausa said harmonising admission guidelines “will help reduce out-of-school youths, strengthen vocational training, and align Nigeria’s tertiary education system with global standards.”
