The United Nations condemned Madagascar’s recent military takeover and urged a swift return to constitutional order after Colonel Michael Randrianirina seized power.

The United Nations on Thursday “condemns the unconstitutional change of government in Madagascar and calls for the return to constitutional order and the rule of law,” said Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.

Colonel Michael Randrianirina, leader of the elite CAPSAT unit, is set to be sworn in as president at the High Constitutional Court after leading the armed forces in toppling President Andry Rajoelina. The coup followed three weeks of widespread protests by youth groups decrying corruption, infrastructure failure and lack of opportunity.

Rajoelina fled the country amid the unrest, and his current location remains unknown. The African Union has already suspended Madagascar in response, declaring that it “totally rejects” the military takeover.

In his first public statement since seizing power, Col. Randrianirina said, “We are staying here for at least 18 months, at most two years.” He defended the coup by citing an order from the High Constitutional Court and promised forthcoming elections after the transitional period.
