Gunmen ambushed security personnel on the Gusau–Funtua road in Zamfara, killing eight people, including five police officers.

Gunmen have killed at least eight security personnel in Zamfara State following an ambush on the Gusau–Funtua road in the Tsafe area, Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed on Thursday.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Lawal said five police officers and three members of a local paramilitary group working with the police were killed in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen opened fire from the roadside bushes as the patrol team passed. “The bandits were moving to a community in the area when they saw the patrol,” said resident Buhari Moriki.

Lawal described the incident as tragic and prayed for an end to insecurity in the state.

Zamfara and other parts of northwest Nigeria have faced repeated attacks from armed groups who kidnap residents for ransom. The region’s violence has persisted alongside the long-running Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, which has displaced millions.
