WhatsApp to limit number of messages users and businesses can send without replies

WhatsApp is testing a new limit on messages sent to unknown contacts to curb spam and unsolicited business messages.

WhatsApp is introducing new controls to reduce spam by limiting how many messages users and businesses can send to people who haven’t replied.

The company said the feature aims to stop unsolicited messages that flood users’ inboxes. “All messages sent to others will count against this new per-month limit unless they get a response,” it stated.

For example, if a user meets someone at a conference and sends three messages without a reply, those count toward the limit. WhatsApp did not disclose the specific number of messages allowed, noting that it is still testing various limits.

Users and businesses nearing the threshold will get a warning pop-up, helping them avoid being blocked from sending further messages.

According to the company, the test will roll out in several countries in the coming weeks. It said regular users are unlikely to be affected, as the change primarily targets bulk spammers and message blasters.
