NARD has threatened a nationwide strike as its 30-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved welfare issues enters its final week, while medical leaders urge new doctors to remain patriotic and uphold professional ethics.
With six days left before the expiration of its 30-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has warned of an impending strike over 19 unresolved welfare and administrative issues.
In a communiqué issued after its AGM in Katsina, NARD accused the government of neglecting welfare concerns, including unpaid salary arrears, stagnated promotions, and deteriorating hospital conditions. The group also condemned the dismissal of five resident doctors from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, describing it as unjust.
According to NARD Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, resident doctors face “systemic neglect, poor welfare and worsening working conditions,” leading to burnout and safety risks. “Unregulated work hours and prolonged shifts are dangerous to both doctors and patients,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) urged the government to convene a health summit to tackle systemic challenges.
At the University of Ibadan’s induction of 136 new doctors, NACA DG Dr. Temitope Ilori and MDCN Registrar Dr. Fatima Kyari urged graduates to shun “japa” and uphold ethics in service to Nigeria.
