The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened as former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido was blocked from obtaining the national chairmanship nomination form, leading him to threaten legal action amidst growing discontent over the endorsement of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as the consensus candidate.
The internal crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Monday as former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido threatened to sue the party after being unable to obtain the nomination form for the national chairman position. This outburst came amid a deepening rift over the endorsement of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus candidate for the convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
Lamido described the process as “manipulated” after he found the office for form sales locked at the party’s national secretariat, alleging the forms were in the custody of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, the convention committee chairman. “I believe in consensus, but there must be consultations. If there are no consultations, then we are not united on board,” Lamido stated. He declared: “If I don’t get the form, I’ll go to court. Simple.”
Despite Lamido’s threat and an alleged forgery petition filed by National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s leadership dismissed the threats, with Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi insisting: “We are focused on moving forward and will not allow anyone or group to derail our progress.”
The party’s screening exercise, however, was postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances,” though Turaki successfully submitted his forms at the official NCOC operational base, Legacy House, on the same day.
