President Bola Tinubu has removed Maryam Sanda, convicted of killing her husband, from the revised presidential pardon list after consultations with the Council of State.

President Bola Tinubu has removed Maryam Sanda, sentenced to death in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, from the presidential pardon list.

This was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Onanuga explained that Tinubu acted under his constitutional powers of prerogative of mercy, as provided in Section 175(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He said the revised list followed consultations with the Council of State and public opinion, alongside the signing of necessary instruments to formalise the updated beneficiaries.

According to the statement, Tinubu ordered the removal of individuals convicted of serious crimes such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal firearms possession.

It added that those previously granted clemency on the old list would now have their sentences reduced instead of full pardons.
