All eight Enugu State lawmakers in the House of Representatives have defected from PDP and Labour Party to the ruling APC, citing internal crises and alignment with Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.
All eight members of the Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the mass defection during Thursday’s plenary after reading letters of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP). The event was witnessed by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
The lawmakers cited “unresolved internal crises” within their former parties as the reason for their defection. After the 2023 general election, Labour Party had won seven of the eight federal seats in Enugu, while PDP secured one.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Nnolim Nnaji, who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, said the decision was to “align with the project-oriented administration” of Governor Mbah.
He added, “Just come to Enugu and see what is happening there. The governor is doing a lot for our people. We also want to bring our state to the centre.”
The defectors described the move as “a bold step into the future,” pledging to work with the APC to attract development to their constituencies.
