“The seven people could not be found in their homes, and their telephone numbers have been dead since this matter started.”
Over 30 suspects are set to face trial over the alleged coup attempt by Nigerian soldiers arrested in September, according to The PREMIUM TIMES reporting.
Sources said the suspects, including senior military officers, will be tried in civil courts and military court martials.
The officers allegedly planned a violent takeover in which top government officials were marked for assassination. A special investigative panel chaired by Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence, has prepared a preliminary report for President Bola Tinubu.
“The seven people could not be found in their homes, and their telephone numbers have been dead since this matter started,” one source said, confirming that seven suspects remain at large.
It remains unclear whether former Bayelsa governor and petroleum minister Timipre Sylva is among them. His spokesperson, Julius Bokoru, said: “Despite sustained efforts, I have been unable to ascertain the reasons or authorisation for this raid.”
PREMIUM TIMES earlier identified 16 top officers allegedly involved in the failed attempt. Fourteen were from the Army, two from the Navy and Air Force.
Military authorities are expected to issue a detailed statement soon as President Tinubu prepares to be briefed on the investigation’s findings.
