“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property.” — Peter Obi
According to local media reporting, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has described the United States’ classification of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and its suggestion of possible military intervention as a wake-up call for Nigerians.
Obi noted that the nation faces an alarming level of insecurity, citing reports that over 10,000 Nigerians have been allegedly killed since May 2023. He condemned the killings as avoidable, blaming weak leadership, poor governance, and lack of commitment from those in authority. While acknowledging that insecurity predates the current administration, he faulted the APC-led government for what he called “incompetence and failure to manage resources effectively.”
Obi called for constructive diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States to foster peaceful, practical solutions to the crisis.
His remarks followed a post by U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social, where he warned that the United States might “go in guns blazing” if the Nigerian government failed to stop the killing of Christians. Trump said the U.S. would halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria and was preparing for possible action through its War Department.
