Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced “unwavering support” for Abuja on Tuesday, even as an aide to President Tinubu dismissed US allegations of religious genocide as a false, orchestrated campaign. Ning stated China firmly opposes interference “using religion and human rights as an excuse.”
According to Sahara Reporters reporting, China has declared its “unwavering support” for the Nigerian government against US military interference following a threat by US President Donald Trump over alleged persecution of Christians.
The position was announced on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, by the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning. Ning was quoted by TheCable as saying: “As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force”.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government told President Trump to respect its sovereignty and avoid deploying American troops. Daniel Bwala, an aide to President Bola Tinubu, stated on Monday that the allegations were part of an “orchestrated media campaign” to paint the administration as anti-Christian. Bwala dismissed the claims of state-backed religious genocide, alleging that U.S. senators were misled by “separatist group” IPOB sympathisers.
He further stressed that while Nigeria deals with insecurity, it does not require foreign boots on the ground: “We do not need the boots of the American soldiers in our soil. There has to be a respect of our territorial integrity,” instead urging President Trump to “assist us with military apparatus.”
