Two US lawmakers have condemned Donald Trump’s threat to launch military action against Nigeria, calling it “reckless and irresponsible.”
Two members of the US Congress, Gregory W. Meeks and Sara Jacobs, have condemned former President Donald Trump’s recent threat to cut off aid and launch military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.
In a joint statement on Monday, the lawmakers described the comments as “irresponsible and reckless,” rejecting the designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
“The Trump administration’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern ignores the complex reality of violence there,” they said. “Clashes between farmers and herders are driven by resource scarcity and land competition, not religion alone.”
They stressed that terrorist groups have killed both Christians and Muslims across the country.
“It is incredibly irresponsible of President Trump to threaten military action,” the statement added, warning that cutting aid would undermine humanitarian and development programs crucial to addressing insecurity in Nigeria.
