The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday postponed debate on U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that the government allows genocide against Christians, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio saying the upper chamber will wait for the federal government’s official response.

The Senate on Tuesday deferred debate on U.S. President Donald Trump’s accusation that Nigeria permits genocide against Christians. Trump had labelled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” and threatened possible military action.

During plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said Nigerians were demanding a response from lawmakers but insisted that the Senate would wait for the government’s official position. “Who am I to reply Trump?” Akpabio asked, noting that the matter had not been formally discussed in the chamber.

His comment drew a reaction from Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who said, “We’re not afraid. Don’t be scared. Nigeria is a sovereign nation.”

Akpabio stressed that Trump’s statement did not reflect Nigeria’s reality, saying the country remains united despite challenges. He also warned against misinformation online, urging security agencies to monitor social media closely, adding, “This is necessary so that their breaking news doesn’t break Nigeria.”
