“The words used were malicious and unbecoming of a public officer.”
Tonye Cole, the 2023 All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Rivers State, has filed a ₦40 billion defamation suit against Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and Channels Television.
The suit stems from remarks made by Mr Wike on Politics Today on September 18, 2025, where he accused Mr Cole of “stealing state resources,” “selling gas assets for $308 million,” and “taking Olympia Hotel.”
Mr Cole described the allegations as false and malicious, saying they were intended to portray him as corrupt and criminally minded.
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju, appearing as a witness, told the court he “was shocked by the recklessness of the allegations.”
Cole, co-founder of Sahara Group, said the broadcast caused “immense emotional, professional, and reputational harm.” He is seeking ₦40 billion in damages, a public apology, and an injunction restraining further publication.
“This is no longer about politics; it is about truth, accountability, and integrity,” Cole said.
