“Breast cancer is not a death sentence.”
The She Safety and Health Initiative, a women-focused non-governmental organisation (NGO), has called for increased awareness to promote early detection of breast cancer and support women battling the disease.
Founder of the initiative, Mrs Abel-Onaiwu, made the call during a breast cancer awareness walk and free screening organised in partnership with the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) on Friday in Ikeja.
She said the outreach, which began on November 3 across military and police barracks, was aimed at sensitising women on breast cancer and the need for regular self-examination.
“The major aim of this awareness walk is to let women know that breast cancer is not a death sentence,” she said.
Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command, Olohundare Jimoh, commended the organisers, saying, “When our wives are happy, we can carry out our duties better in service to the nation.”
The event featured self-examination demonstrations and first-aid training.
