Dangers of prolonged toilet sitting

Healthcare experts warn that prolonged toilet sitting can lead to rectal prolapse, weakened pelvic muscles, and hemorrhoids.

Sitting on the toilet for extended periods can have serious health consequences, according to healthcare professionals reporting. Experts recommend that individuals limit their time on the toilet to no more than ten minutes to avoid complications.

Constipation is a common cause of prolonged toilet use, characterized by infrequent and difficult bowel movements, often resulting in dry stool and incomplete evacuation. “You should always drink enough water and consume more fiber. It will make your bowel movement easier and help prevent constipation,” experts advise.

Medical specialists highlight three main health risks linked to extended toilet sitting:

  1. Rectal prolapse: This occurs when part of the rectum protrudes from the anus. Risk factors include age over 50, chronic diarrhea, spinal cord conditions, and constipation.
  2. Weakened pelvic muscles: Prolonged sitting can impair muscles supporting the uterus, intestines, and bladder, leading to urinary or fecal leakage, painful urination, and urgent bowel movements. Pelvic exercises can help strengthen these muscles.
  3. Hemorrhoids: Extended toilet time increases pressure around the anus, causing swollen veins that result in bleeding, itching, or anal lumps.

Experts recommend seeking medical attention if symptoms persist or if there are signs of rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, or weakened pelvic muscles.
