Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko says President Tinubu and constitutional amendment committees support the creation of Anioma state, describing progress as “unprecedented.”
Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko has stated that the creation of Anioma state is gaining significant traction, with support from President Bola Tinubu and constitutional amendment committees. The senator made the remarks during the Izu Anioma Towns Union event in Abuja over the weekend, where the first Anioma cultural festival was unveiled, according to a report from THECABLE.
Nwoko revealed that 97 senators had previously endorsed the state’s creation, calling the backing “unprecedented.” He explained that his bill seeks to carve Anioma from nine local government areas in Delta North, including four in Aniocha, Oshimili, two in Ika, and three in Ndokwa, noting that neighbouring communities like Igbanke have also shown interest.
“Only one state will be created in Nigeria, and that one state will be Anioma,” he said. He added that both the Senate and House committees on constitutional amendment, with representation from all states, agreed that the south-east should have a sixth state for regional balance.
Nwoko said the initiative has the support of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and that Tinubu is prepared to approve the creation once constitutional processes are completed. “We have done our homework. A lot of lobbying, contacts, and consultations are ongoing. Nothing is being left undone,” he said.
He outlined next steps: submission to the presidency, concurrence by state assemblies and governors, a national referendum, and a signing ceremony by Tinubu. Nwoko urged unity, stating, “Anioma state will be the beginning of a new era.”
