President Donald Trump has proposed $2,000 payments to most Americans to demonstrate the benefits of his tariff policy.

US President Donald Trump has proposed issuing $2,000 payments to most Americans, excluding high-income earners, as part of what he called a “tariff dividend” to highlight the success of his trade policies, according to a report from EURONEWS.

Trump announced the proposal on social media Sunday, writing, “People that are against Tariffs are fools!,” adding that the US is “taking in trillions of dollars and will soon begin paying down our enormous debt, $37 trillion.” He said the plan would distribute “a dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high-income people!)” from revenue collected through tariffs on global economies.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent later told ABC News that the administration was exploring various forms the dividend could take, including tax reductions on tips, overtime, or Social Security.

Analysts estimate that roughly four-fifths of Americans could qualify, with the proposal potentially costing the federal budget hundreds of billions of dollars in 2026.

The announcement follows a week of legal uncertainty after the Supreme Court questioned Trump’s authority to impose tariffs under emergency powers — a cornerstone of his second-term economic agenda.
