The Federal Government has opened talks with the United Kingdom to allow former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, serve the rest of his prison sentence in Nigeria.
The Federal Government has begun consultations with the United Kingdom to facilitate the transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to Nigeria to complete his prison term.
According to a report from ARISE NEWS, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a high-level delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi, to meet UK Ministry of Justice officials over the matter.
Ekweremadu was convicted in the United Kingdom in May 2023 for organ trafficking, following a plot to bring a 21-year-old Lagos street vendor to Britain for a kidney transplant for his daughter. He was sentenced to nine years and eight months under the UK Modern Slavery Act. His wife, Beatrice, received four years and six months and was released early in 2025, while a medical intermediary, Dr. Obinna Obeta, got ten years.
Confirming the development, Alkasim AbdulKadir, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Minister, said, “Consultations are still ongoing with UK authorities on the matter,” adding that “an appeal for prisoner exchange for him to serve the remainder of his term in Nigeria” had been tabled.
