ASUU’s Nsukka Zone has accused the federal government of deliberate delays, insincerity, and lack of political will in resolving long-standing issues in the education sector, warning of a looming nationwide crisis.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Nsukka Zone has accused the federal government of endangering Nigeria’s future through persistent delays and insincerity in addressing long-standing issues affecting the education sector. This was disclosed by Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Christian Opata, during a press conference at Benue State University, Makurdi, according to DAILY TRUST.
Speaking on behalf of eight universities in the zone, Opata said government officials had continued to pay lip service to education despite years of negotiations and agreements. “The federal government is deliberately killing the future of our nation through its lip service to education,” he said, describing the slow pace of renegotiation as a threat to national development.
He revealed that the union suspended its recent warning strike out of respect for appeals from Nigerians but noted that the government had shown no genuine commitment since talks resumed. He added that ASUU’s National Executive Council rejected the proposed salary review during its Taraba meeting, calling it “a mere drop in the ocean.”
Opata dismissed claims of limited funds, citing growing FAAC revenues, and argued that “it is not economic hardship but lack of political will” delaying progress. He warned that failure to conclude negotiations within one month could trigger another crisis.
ASUU reiterated that neglecting tertiary education amounts to “deliberate destruction of Nigeria’s future.”
