The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to resume a nationwide strike, citing the federal government’s slow pace and lack of genuine commitment in renegotiating agreements on staff welfare and university revitalization.

According to a report from PEOPLES GAZETTE, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a nationwide university shutdown if its demands are not met.

The union’s Kano zonal coordinator, Abdulkadir Muhammad, issued the warning on Tuesday, stating the one-month ultimatum given to the Tinubu government after suspending a warning strike in October is nearing its expiration.

Muhammad decried the government’s “sluggish approach” to renegotiating key agreements. He stated that ASUU’s National Executive Council is dissatisfied with the slow pace of talks, calling it a “major obstacle.”

“However, our hope for a holistic and timely resolution of the issues is increasingly being dashed,” Muhammad told journalists. He accused government officials of employing tactics to “undermine the renegotiation process and misinform the public.”

He further claimed the government’s current offers would neither improve working conditions nor attract scholars.

Muhammad also urged a moratorium on new state universities, stating, “Governors have cultivated the habit of establishing universities in their states without commitment to funding them.”
