ASUU has warned it may resume its nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands at the end of its one-month ultimatum.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that it may resume its nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands at the expiration of its one-month ultimatum, according to a report from TRIBUNE ONLINE.

ASUU’s Kano Zonal Coordinator, Abdulkadir Muhammad, delivered the warning on Tuesday in Kano during a news conference held after the zone’s meeting. The union had suspended its warning strike in October, giving the government a month to address issues related to lecturers’ welfare and the need for a conducive teaching and learning environment.

Muhammad criticised what he called the government’s sluggish approach to renegotiating longstanding agreements aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s public universities. He said the assessment presented at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on November 8 and 9 in Taraba State showed dissatisfaction with the “slow pace” of negotiations.

Representatives at the meeting included delegates from Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University Kano, Kaduna State University, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Federal University Dutse, Northwest University, and Sule Lamido University.

Muhammad said the goodwill shown by suspending the strike “is increasingly being dashed,” adding that some government officials “employ different tactics to undermine the renegotiation process.”

Meanwhile, ASUU’s Benin Zonal Coordinator, Professor Monday Igbafen, accused the Minister of Education and other officials of “insincerity,” warning that their actions threaten timely and transparent resolution of the issues.
