Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde says his dispute with Nyesom Wike is rooted in concerns over preserving Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

According to LEADERSHIP, Oyo State governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, has revealed the cause of his disagreement with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stating that the former Rivers State governor is attempting to steer Nigeria toward a one-party system. Makinde said such an agenda contradicts the intentions of the country’s founding fathers and threatens the nation’s democratic framework.

Speaking on the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the confrontation at the party’s national secretariat on Tuesday, Makinde reassured party members, saying, “A message of hope, real hope that I want to give to our members all across the nation and Nigerians.” He described the party’s turmoil as a necessary phase, adding, “We should know that this is a case of it gets worse before it gets better. And if we have to stay here for the next two weeks so that democracy will survive in Nigeria, you will see us here.”

Addressing questions about his fallout with Wike despite their G5 alliance, Makinde said, “Well, small minds talk about people. The average mind talks about events. We will rather talk about issues.” He maintained that the core issue is protecting Nigeria’s multi-party system, stating, “We don’t believe in a one-party Nigeria… We must sustain it so that Nigerians can have options when they are choosing their leaders.”
