Ukraine has received the remains of 1,000 soldiers from Russia, part of ongoing repatriations amid the conflict.

According to a report from VANGUARD, Ukraine said Thursday that it had received from Russia the remains of 1,000 people Moscow claimed were Ukrainian soldiers killed during the war. Kyiv’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed on social media that the bodies were returned and that investigators and experts will soon identify them.

Russian state media cited unnamed sources saying the transfer occurred in exchange for the remains of 30 Russian soldiers. Throughout the conflict, Ukraine has received a total of 15,000 repatriated bodies from Moscow, making these exchanges one of the few areas of ongoing cooperation between the two countries since Russia’s February 2022 invasion.
