Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar has urged Nigerians to unite and defend the nation’s sovereignty amid rising external threats and divisive tensions.

Former Military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has called on Nigerians to unite in defense of the nation’s sovereignty following comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump about Nigeria.

Speaking in a telephone interview from London on Tuesday, Abubakar described Trump’s remarks as a “grave threat to the country’s hard-won unity” and warned that such statements could undermine national peace and stability.

He urged Nigerians to put aside political, ethnic, and religious differences and stand together in solidarity during this tense period. “Unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride at this critical moment,” he said.

The former leader called on the U.S. government to support Nigeria’s fight against insecurity rather than issue threats. He stressed the importance of engaging Washington through strategic dialogue and “quiet diplomacy” to de-escalate tensions and address underlying concerns.

Abubakar appealed to all stakeholders to prioritize peace, dialogue, and cooperation, noting that only through unity could Nigeria overcome external and internal challenges threatening its security and cohesion
